We recently completed a technically demanding project for QinetiQ at their Farnborough site, involving the repair of a leaking 125mm underground water main. This wasn’t just a straightforward fix — it was the culmination of months of detailed investigation and planning to ensure minimal disruption to multiple tenants and critical operations on site.
Understanding the Challenge
The affected water main served several key buildings within the QinetiQ estate and played a vital role in supporting sensitive and continuous processes. A full shut-off of the supply wasn’t an option, as it would have significantly impacted operations being run by both QinetiQ and other tenants.
The leak, while underground and not immediately visible, posed a growing risk to site infrastructure and efficiency. However, given the live nature of the supply, a repair had to be executed without any interruption to the water service — requiring precision planning and specialist execution.
Our Approach
Over several months, we worked closely with QinetiQ’s facilities management team to develop a comprehensive, low-impact repair strategy. This included:
Detailed leak detection and ground scanning to map the exact location and condition of the pipe
Risk assessments and method statements tailored to the secure and high-sensitivity nature of the site
Coordinated scheduling to ensure work was carried out at optimal times with minimal site disruption
Selection of specialist equipment that would allow a live repair on a pressurised 125mm main without requiring isolation
When the time came to implement the repair, our highly trained team executed the live fix safely and efficiently. Using precision tools and WRAS-approved materials, we removed the damaged section and installed a new fitting while maintaining full water service throughout.
The Result
Thanks to the rigorous preparation and live repair approach, the leak was resolved without any interruption to water supply and without disruption to tenants or ongoing processes. All surface areas were carefully reinstated, and QinetiQ were left with a fully operational, future-proofed section of water main.
A Showcase of Collaborative Problem-Solving
This project exemplifies the value of early engagement, thorough planning, and technical expertise — especially in environments where downtime simply isn’t an option. We’re proud to have delivered a successful solution for QinetiQ, and grateful for the close collaboration throughout.
